Shorter the format, bigger the impact individuals have. And if those in-form players can put together few match winning performances, they can pull their team through in short tournament of shortest format = T20 world cup. In 2016, who are the batsmen with most wickets and bowlers with most wickets, that's what we're calculating down in following..
The record of most runs in one World T20 belongs to Virat Kohli who made 319 runs from only 6 matches during the 2014 edition. Kohli made four fifties in that tournament and took India to the final. Kohli broke Tillakaratne Dilshan's record who made made 317 runs during 2009 edition and then again, Sri Lankans had made it to the final.
Ajantha Mendis holds the record of most wickets in one T20 World cup tournament, taking 15 scalps at an economy of just over run a ball with a five wicket haul during the 2012 edition. Mendis went past Dirk Nannes who had 14 wickets for Australia during the 2010 edtion. Umar Gul of Pakistan has twice taken 13 wickets in one championship.
Note that schedule of World T20 2016 is set in a way that 8 minor teams play a qualifier round before top two reaching the super 10 stage. This gives 3 matches extra to the players of whichever team that reaches the second round and hence little extra opportunity to score more runs or take wickets. But since that's the format ICC has chosen, our list will contain the overall figures.
Update Latest table to come up as soon as the tournament starts on 8th March 2016.
The ICC World Twenty20 India 2016 trophy will embark on a
global journey from Mumbai on Sunday, 13 December, before returning to
New Delhi on Monday, 1 February.
As part of the
Nissan Trophy Tour, the trophy will visit 12 countries taking part in
the tournament which will be staged in India from 11 March to 3 April
2016.
During its journey, the trophy will be on
display at domestic and international matches, as well as at various
public places, which will enable the fans to capture a very special
moment with the most prestigious silverware in the shortest format of
the world game. Details of the trophy’s public appearances will be
announced by the host boards closer to the time.
ICC Chief Executive David Richardson said: "The Nissan ICC World Twenty20 2016 Trophy Tour has been intended to advance the competition as well as to connect with our fans and give them the first chance to draw near to the trophy, which will be lifted by the triumphant commander on 3 April in Kolkata. We might want to express gratitude toward Nissan for their sponsorship of the Trophy Tour and we are certain it will be a major accomplishment as it goes over the world in front of the ICC World Twenty20 in India one year from now."
Roel de Vries, Nissan Corporate Vice President and worldwide head of promoting and mark system, included: "We banded together with the ICC to convey cricket fans closer to the diversion. Fans feel thrill and energy while watching a cricket match. Those are the same feelings we need individuals to encounter while driving a Nissan. We trust the Nissan Trophy Tour will assemble fervor around the globe in front of the ICC World Twenty20."
The Delhi High Court held on 18th December said that ICC Twenty20 World Cup 2016 matches cannot be played in Delhi unless the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) acquires completion certificate and requisite compliances. ICC Twenty20 World Cup is scheduled to be held in India from 8th march to 3rd April.
A seat of judges B.D. Ahmed and Sanjeev Sachdeva further said that it had in its past request permitted DDCA to hold India-South Africa Test arrangement match in New Delhi from December 3 to 7 on the terms that in future they won't lead any new competition without a fulfillment authentication.
It additionally said that in its December 18 request it was made clear that DDCA was given "last risk" to get the essential clearances by 31st walk. Clearances from Archeological Survey of India and Delhi Urban Arts Commission alongside no-protest declaration from Land and Development Office and a fulfillment testament from South Delhi Municipal Corporation.
The Delhi government formed a two-member
committee to investigate the allegations. The inquiry committee had
submitted its report to the Delhi government about the alleged financial
irregularities in DDCA. The Delhi government was preparing to set up an
inquiry commission over it when the CBI raids took place.
Former
sports minister Ajay Maken claimed that the investigation by Serious
Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) had found that the reconstruction of
the Ferozshah Kotla Stadium was carried out between 2002 and 2007, which
saw an escalation of costs by Rs 90 crore. The initial budget was 24
crore, but it eventually went up to Rs 114 crore.
Arun
Jaitley is one of the most powerful persons in the Indian government. If
the investigation finds wrongdoing by Jaitley, it will surely tarnish
the image of the Indian government.
If Mahendra Singh Dhoni heads India's limited-overs teams then Virat Kohli is in charge of the Test side. But both the cricketers will be against each other on Sunday as FC Goa and Chennaiyin FC will lock horns in the summit clash of the Indian Super League (ISL).
Before the finale, IBNLive takes a look at few of the players who can be crucial for Chennaiyin FC on Sunday.
John Stiven Mendoza Valencia: With 12 goals in 15 matches, Colombian striker Stiven Mendoza has been in red-hot form in this season's ISL. Mendoza has been one of the main characters in Chennaiyin's remarkable turnaround and that has made this young striker undroppable. Mendoza is a comfortable favourite for the Golden Boot award this year as he is the leading goal scorer of the league. What makes him dangerous is his ability to make room in the penalty area. Mendoza is a threat to Goa's defence and is left unmarked, he will surely not miss a chance to punish Zico's men.
Edel Apoula: The Cameroon-born Edel was one of the best goalkeepers last season. Playing for Atletico de Kolkata in ISL 1, he recorded a save percentage of 86.3% . This year, Edel might have traded his colours but not his habbit. Edel has 10 clean sheets now in ISL. With 6 clean sheets under his belt this season, the former Paris Saint-Germain custodian is arguably one of the finest performers in the knock-out stages of ISL. In the last season's final, he pulled off arguably the best and most crucial save of ISL 2014 when he expertly saved a Michael Chopra close range effort. His experience of playing in big matches will definitely prove handy for Chennaiyin FC.
Jeje Lalpekhlua: One of the brightest young talents in the country and a winner the I-League in his first year with Mohun Bagan, Jeje had a brilliant first season of the ISL. He scored four goals in the league, the most by any Indian. And this year too, Jeje is at it again. The young forward has scored 6 goals and is one shy of equalling Sunil Chhetri's tally of 7 goals. Jeje is the highest goal scoring Indian in the history of ISL. Jeje's partnership with Mendoza has been one of the highlights this season for Chennaiyin FC.
Mailson Alves-Bernard Mendy Pairing: Mailson is Chennaiyin’s best centre back in terms of clearing the danger out from the box. They have been very flexible at the back, but it is quite evident that the partnership of Mailson and Mendy has been the most fruitful for the Super Machans.
Elano Blummer: The former Manchester City striker was the best performer for Chennaiyin FC last season. The Brazilian, who was last season's Golden Boot winner, has been a creative midfielder and netted 4 goals this season. The combination of Elano and Mendoza have done wonders for Chennai throughout the season and coach Marco Materazzi will depend a lot on Elano's antics in the final.
Indian teams for the tour of Australia were announced on Saturday by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) with Yuvraj Singh making a comeback. The selectors surprised everyone by picking the old guards like Harbhajan Singh and Ashish Nehra, and also by giving chances to youngsters who have performed well in domestic circuit like Brainder Sran and Hardik Pandya.
Two separate teams of 15 members each were picked for the tour, with Mahendra Singh Dhoni retaining his position as the skipper for both the outfits.
The tour comprises five ODIs and three T20 Internationals to be
played between January 12 and 31 at Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne,
Canberra, Sydney (ODIs), Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney (T20Is).
The ICC World T20 Cup is officially on in full swing and already
there are signs of it being a cracker of a tournament. What makes it
even more special is that the teams this year are structured in such a
way it is next to impossible to pick the winner in the current edition.
Here’s looking at the top four teams that stand a chance at winning the tourney on October 7.
India –
The inaugural winners of the Cup, India certainly has an edge in T20s
what with IPL being a huge sellout in the country over the past five
years. The experience of players from the IPL will only help the team
and the pitches in Sri Lanka, which is hosting the tournament, is not
very different from Indian surfaces, except for a little less turn and
bounce. That’s another advantage that India carries apart from a fairly
robust team with the likes of Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag,
Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli able to win matches on their own if they
strike form. The bowling department is a little weak but comeback Singhs
– Yuvraj and Harbhajan – will look to make the maximum gains for India.
If we win, India will hold the enviable record of becoming the first
nation to hold the ODI World Cup as well as World T20 Cup
simultaneously.
Pakistan – Pakistan is to T20
what South Africa is to ODIs - the team that has always fallen just
short. A misjudged scoop shot by Misbah-ul Haq sealed their fate in the
first T20 World Cup.But their
consistency is beyond doubt. Pakistan has been in two finals, won once
and reached the semi-finals last time around. The team, which is now led
by Mohammed Hafeez, will see the return of players like Abdul Razzak,
Mohammad Sami, Shoaib Malik and Sohail Tanvir, making this the most
potent bowling attack in the tournament. And let’s not forget the ace in
Pakistan’s armoury - Shahid Afridi - who will be keen to make a mark in
this edition and continue his fine form in T20s.
West Indies – This is one team that is definitely on
a high. West Indies were ruthless in their domination of New Zealand
and beat the latter in all three formats of the game in their recently
concluded series. This Darren Sammy led side can definitely go all the
way given their mix of players and proven match winners. This IPL’s
poster boy Chris Gayle is a part of the team, which means fireworks can
definitely be expected. Apart from Gayle, other big hitters who found
fame at the IPL such as Kieron Pollard, Marlon Samuels and Dwayne Smith
are also part of the team along with Sunil Narine and Ravi Rampaul and
Fidel Edwards who form a formidable pace attack among themselves. West
Indies is the black horse of this tournament, no doubt about it.
Sri Lanka – This isn’t really difficult to guess.
The team will look to make maximum use of their home crowd as they look
for their elusive first T20 title. This is also the team that boasts of a
mind-boggling array of world-class batsmen such as Kumar Sangakkara,
Tillakaratne Dilshan and captain Mahela Jayawardene. All-rounder Angelo
Matthews and pacer Lasith Malinga are other names the opposition will
have to contend with. The team is ranked third in the ICC T20 rankings
right now but without the presence of a ICC trophy, the team’s
validation in this format will always be questioned. Sri Lanka will look
to its power performers to change that equation in its favour.
We’re
betting these four teams will make it to the semis but when the stakes
get that high, it is almost impossible to predict who’ll win, especially
in a tournament as unpredictable and mercurial as T20s. Who do you
think will lift the Cup?
As the T20 cricket world cup kicks off today, here's a look back at the best showdowns in Twenty20's short history!
India VS. South Africa
This
clash between India and the Proteas during the 2010 World T20 remains
memorable, not only for India's epic win against the Africans, but also
the colossal 101 that Suresh Raina scored in his 60-ball win to catapult
India ahead in the tournament.
India won by 14 runs, and Raina the Man of the Match, won accolades for his 5-sixes and 9-fours marathon!
West Indies VS. South Africa
Chris
Gayle is a true beast of a player when it comes to this form of
cricket, having proved his capabilities time and again in IPL as well as
international T20. This one held during the inaugural ICC World T20 in
2007 saw him scoring a 117 by hitting 10 sixes and seven boundaries, and
taking the grand total to 205
Yet the Africans' strong batting line-up thwarted down the Indies' 205, making this one spectacular match to watch!
West Indies VS. Bangladesh
West
Indies tour of Bangladesh saw the Indies thwarting the Bangladeshi team
time and again, but this time around, the Bongs brought a cannon to a
gun-fight.
The Indies set a target of 132 for the Bangladeshis
to chase, which they thought the latter would be thoroughly incapable of
doing, but they did and they did it with flair! It came to a point
where they needed four runs off two balls to which Mushfiqur Rahim
smashed a massive six to bag the match, and pride!
South Africa VS. New Zealand
South
Africans surely know how to put up a show when it comes to Twenty20.
Making their third sighting on this list, the Proteans were pitted
against the Kiwis who made an excellent target of 174 for the Africans
to follow.
This is when the Proteans rolled out Richard Levi to
play and he played the game of his life! Scoring a brilliant 117 by
hitting 13 sixes and 5 fours, Levi levelled out the Kiwis' 174 with 24
balls to spare!
India VS. Pakistan
The
India VS. Pakistan group match of 2007's ICC T20 World Cup was one
breath-taking match to remember! India having scored 141, set the target
for Pakistan to achieve. And Pakistan proved a point by chasing it till
the end, only to falter at the last ball to tie the match down.Â
This
moment boiled down to a nail-biting finish depending solely on the
bowl out, which the Indians gracefully bagged. All thanks to Sehwag,
Bajji, and Robin Uthappa's accurate bowling of course!
