t20 world cup 2016 teams
As the current year reaches the end of its middle third, preparations have already begun for the major event that will take place next year - the ICC T20 World Cup. Set to be hosted for the first time in India, it is one of the most expected sports events of 2016. After being hosted by South Africa, England and West Indies, the T20 World Cup finally set foot inside the subcontinent as Sri Lanka hosted it in 2014. Now, it all set to come back to India - the inaugural winners of the trophy.

The Qualifiers for the World Cup was held on July, where Netherlands and Scotland shared the Cup, thus qualifying for the main event in 2016. Along with them were old hands Ireland and Afghanistan, comeback team Hong Kong and the new entrant Oman. These six teams will join Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in the first round of the main tournament, where two teams will advance to the Super Six and meet the other teams.

The World Cup promises to be an exciting affair, and all the fans are geared up to support their favourite Indian cricketers. But this time the tournament has a big Indian flavour, not owing to the Indian team, but rather the number of Indian-born players playing for other nations.

Here are some of them:

The ICC World T20 is the international championship of T20 cricket. Organised by International Cricket Council (ICC), the tournament currently consists of 16 teams, comprising all ten ICC full members and six other associate or affiliate members chosen through the World Twenty20 Qualifier. The event has generally been held every two years, although there is a four-year gap between the next two scheduled tournaments (2016 T20 World Cup in India and 2020 in Australia and New Zealand). All matches played are accorded Twenty20 International status.

Five World T20 tournaments have so far been played, and no team has yet won the tournament on multiple times. The first event, the 2007 World Twenty20, was staged in South Africa, and won by India, who defeated Pakistan in the final at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. The 2009 tournament took place in England, and was won by the previous runner-up, Pakistan, who defeated Sri Lanka in the final at Lord's. The third tournament was held in 2010, hosted by the countries making up the West Indies cricket team. England defeated Australia in the final in Barbados, which was played at Kensington Oval. The fourth tournament, the 2012 World Twenty20, was held in Asia for the first time, with all matches played in Sri Lanka. The West Indies won the tournament by defeating Sri Lanka in the final, winning its first international tournament since the 2004 Champions Trophy. The fifth tournament, the 2014 ICC World Twenty20, was hosted by Bangladesh, and was won by Sri Lanka, who became the first time to play in three finals.

The 2016 ICC World Twenty20 will be the 6th ICC World Twenty20 competition and is planned to be held in India from 11 March to 3 April. The International Cricket Council Board, after its initially meeting in Dubai on Jan 28, 2015, has granted India to have the World Twenty20 title in 2016. Sri Lanka are the guarding champions.

For the second time, the competition will began With 16 teams. All ten full members will qualify automatically, and were joined by the six Associate Members that qualified through the 2015 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier, played in Ireland and Scotland between 6 to 26 July 2015. The qualifing groups are Ireland, Scotland, Afghanistan, Hong Kong, the Netherlands and Oman. Preceding the qualifying competition, Oman just had Twenty20 status, however with their movement to the World Twenty20 competition, they increased full Twenty20 International status.

The top eight teams in the ICC T20I Championship rankings automatically progress to the Super 10 stage, unless one of the top eight is an associate in which case the next ranked full member will progress in their place. The remaining eight teams compete in the group stage, from which two teams advance to the Super 10 stage.
