The 2016 ICC World Twenty20 will be the 6th ICC World Twenty20 competition and is planned to be held in India from 11 March to 3 April. The International Cricket Council Board, after its initially meeting in Dubai on Jan 28, 2015, has granted India to have the World Twenty20 title in 2016. Sri Lanka are the guarding champions.
For the second time, the competition will began With 16 teams. All ten full members will qualify automatically, and were joined by the six Associate Members that qualified through the 2015 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier, played in Ireland and Scotland between 6 to 26 July 2015. The qualifing groups are Ireland, Scotland, Afghanistan, Hong Kong, the Netherlands and Oman. Preceding the qualifying competition, Oman just had Twenty20 status, however with their movement to the World Twenty20 competition, they increased full Twenty20 International status.
The top eight teams in the ICC T20I Championship rankings automatically progress to the Super 10 stage, unless one of the top eight is an associate in which case the next ranked full member will progress in their place. The remaining eight teams compete in the group stage, from which two teams advance to the Super 10 stage.
